IDC: Chromebooks sold Macs for the first time in 2020

New data shows that Chromebook laptops sold out Mac computers for the first time in 2020 by a full year, a year driven primarily by the commercial demand for lightweight, powerful and affordable personal computers. Data from IDC (via GeekWire) shows that Windows still dominates the market, although its share declined over the course of the year as Chrome OS rose to second place over MacOS.

For the full year, Windows’ market share decreased by 4.9% in 2020 compared to 2019, while the Mac grew from 6.7% to 7.5%. IDC’s data contains collective information about desktops, laptops and workstations, and does not provide a breakdown of different types of product. However, it is noteworthy that Chrome OS contains products made by Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo.

market share

The demand for personal computers skyrocketed during 2020, mainly due to the shift to work and learning at home. Market data estimates that the Mac grew by about 30% in Q4 of 2020 compared to the same quarter last year. Compared to other producers, Apple had the largest year-on-year growth in the quarter.

In addition to the market shifts due to changes in work and school patterns, Apple introduced its first Apple silicone Macs in the fourth quarter of 2020, which was very well received.
