iCloud encryption error closes Rachel True over a boolean flag

It appears that an apparent bug in the design of iCloud has excluded a user from accessing her account on the iCloud website, due to her interpretation of ‘True’.

Author Rachel True shared on Twitter that she gets an error when trying to sign in to iCloud.

TITLE OF REPORTED ERROR: Typing error: cannot set value ‘true’ to property ‘last name

It turns out that iCloud interprets her surname, True, as a Boolean flag, and therefore she can not log in. She noted that she had been excluded for more than 6 months. She later followed up that she spent hours with Apple support on the phone without getting a solution.

However, it looks like a resolution may be coming soon. She later said she would hear from Apple earlier this week. One answer joked that her quickest solution would be to get married and take her husband’s name, but that ‘Mr / Mrs’ Null’ would probably repeat the problem.

Arun Gupta of Apple’s iCloud Team reached out also. Rachel is frustrated, and rightly so, as she still paid for iCloud during the period she did not have access to it. iCloud is an integral part of the iOS and macOS experience, so if not usable, it affects the overall operation of people-dependent devices. Last week, we discussed the story of how Dustin Curtis was locked out of his Apple ID due to a missing Mac swap. We later learned that only the purchasing power of the Apple ID is blocked, since the iCloud aspect is separate from the Apple ID.
