iCloud allegedly excluded a user from her surname

iCloud has had occasional service issues, but the latest issue appears to be very … specific. Actor and writer Rachel True claims iCloud effectively locked her out of her account due to the way her surname was written. Reportedly, her Mac thought lowercase “true” was a Boolean (true or false) flag that allowed the iCloud software to run on the computer. The problem has been going on for more than six months, she said.

True said she talked for hours with customer service, and that Apple did not stop asking her for service. She can switch to the free level, though she would also lose most of her online storage.

We asked Apple for comment.

This is a rare bug if it works as described. Even if you share the last name True (or false, for that matter), you must type it in a specific way to reflect the problem. This raises the question of how MacOS could mistakenly name a software flag in the first place. At least it does not respond to direct commands – though you may want to get a name change if you’m from rm rf ‘just to be on the safe side.
