Since Nike (quietly) revealed that he can customize people the Dunk sneaker, which is probably his hottest silhouette, I knew right away that I needed some to name my own. Little did I know, however, that it would become such a nightmare to buy the damn shoes. Because the company, despite the fact that Nike knew that its “By You” Dunk Lows would be very popular, was not prepared for the launch day on January 7: the site did not give error codes to customers while trying to tamper . their design, to expire completely and not complete their purchases.
But somehow I managed to pick up a pair for $ 110. This was mainly due to the fact that I stored my Dunk design on Nike’s website days before the crash, and the fact that I never gave up on refreshing the payroll, even though I had a deluge of error messages. After all, it felt so good to achieve the victory, especially since Nike decided to get Dunk sneakers (whether it be the SB or classical artists) extremely limited and hard to get these days. It’s a shame that what used to be a shoe that would be on the shelves at Kohl’s or Journey on the day is now a hype phenomenon, but Nike ultimately gives nothing away from our feelings.
Nike is going to sell its highly coveted stuff, regardless, even if drops like this are a total mess, and even if its SNKRS app remains an embarrassment and a heavy joke for the entire sneaker community.
But now I’m over the moon that my Dunk By You creation is standing in front of my door here. As someone who grew up as a skate / emo kid, Dunks was always one of my visitors in the early 2000s, namely because they were cheaper than Air Jordans and because I always loved how they looked. Their aesthetics have not changed since then, and although I mostly wear high heels these days, I could not miss the opportunity to let go of my own twist on the iconic Dunk silhouette.
As you can see, I was looking at a green, white and red theme, which was my way of honoring the Mexican flag – the place I come from. To spice it up a bit – how will I make my Mexicans proud if I do not add spices to it? something? – I went for a black Nike “Swoosh” logo, simply as a nod to my preference for darkened outfits. I also mixed leather materials (green and red) with suede (white and black), just to give it a touch of subtle elegance.
And last but not least, the headline made me appreciate the fact that Nike made me choose an outsole made of gum. It reminds me of all the old school Dunks I had before, and only through the design detail can I like this so much more. By the way, I do not have a name for them, but I think something in the line of “Taco” Dunks would work, but it’s just because I love tacos as much as sneakers, nothing really with the shoes except that tacos is a Mexican treasure.
My only regret is that I could not get a second pair so I would have an extra one in storage for when I finally wear it. I know, I know, I should be glad I got it a pair since thousands of other people have not done it – and believe me, I am. We hope Nike does another round of By You Dunk Lows so others have a chance. That’s all right, but then I will not hold my breath again.
