JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Now that teachers of all ages can get COVID-19 vaccine shots on the vaccination sites supported in Florida, the question now is which age group is next?
During a news conference Thursday in Crystal River, Gov. Ron DeSantis addressed the issue of age and the vaccine.
While only the age requirement for teachers has been dropped for the time being, DeSantis has speculated about what will happen if age restrictions for the entire population are lifted.
“I think there’s going to be a much smaller percentage of 25-year-olds who want it then 75-year-olds, and that honestly makes sense because the risk is very different,” DeSantis said. “So I do not think you will get more than 50% of the people under 50, and I think it could be even less than that.”
At present, the governor says 54% of all seniors in the state have received at least one shot of the vaccine.
DeSantis described the demand at the four federal sites on the first day as “lukewarm” and said they used about 6,500 of a possible 12,000 doses on the sites, including one at Gateway Mall in Jacksonville.

Vaccinations were also continued on Thursday for those who meet the requirements of the governor, which now includes teachers of all ages. Carol Beckner, who teaches at Trinity Christian Academy on Jacksonville’s Westside, was one of the teachers who was vaccinated at the Normandy Community Center on Thursday – one of the two satellite vaccination rooms in Jacksonville.
“I want my students to be safe, so I think that’s very important,” Beckner said.
Betty Johnson, 81, was vaccinated on the Gateway Mall website on Thursday, though she was reluctant to do so. She said something had happened recently that made her change her mind.

The Gateway Mall site can administer 2,000 shots a day, while the two satellite sites can give 1,000.
By the end of the day, Thursday, about 840 vaccinations had been applied at the Gateway Mall site, about 150 had been administered at the Normandy Community Center and about 29 at Hammond Senior Center, the other satellite site.
The governor also spoke on Thursday about the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, saying he believes younger people will prefer it because it requires only one dose. Regarding the distribution of the vaccine, DeSantis said he would have more information about it soon.
