Hundreds of COVID vaccines are wasted in the city of NJ due to lack of refrigeration

Three hundred coronavirus vaccines were delivered to the city of Newark and considered unusable because they were not in the refrigerator in time, a local health official said.

The case is now being investigated, said Mark Wade, director of the department of health and wellness.

“We have reviewed our delivery and assessment procedures and protocols, which will be closely monitored to prevent this from happening again,” Wade said in a statement.

TAPinto Newark first reported the issue. A city spokesman did not immediately respond to a call for comment.

It was not immediately clear which vaccine was being investigated. However, the city vaccinated ministers with the Moderna vaccine during a news conference at the Newark Department of Health and Wellness.

According to the CDC, the Moderna vaccine should be stored between -13 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 30 days at temperatures between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit before the bottles are used.

The city has done vaccinations at places in Newark, including pop-up sites.
