CARY – Epic Games takes another step forward in creating digital human images that look like the real us. On Wednesday, Epic launched ‘MetaHumans’ through its Unreal video game development engine
In a ‘sharp peak’, Epic says users can create ‘high-fidelity digital people’.
The tool is called MetaHuman Creator, and Epic says it ‘can empower anyone to make a custom photorealistic digital human, fully equipped and complete with hair and clothes, within minutes.
The new development comes after Epic, meanwhile, faced Hyprsense in real time last November. Hyprsense says the technology “provides creators of Unreal Engine the ability to use and drive the most advanced character assets on any platform.”
Watch the video:
“MetaHuman Creator is a cloud-based app that takes real-time digital human creation from weeks or even months to less than an hour – at an unprecedented standard of quality, fidelity and realism,” says the Unreal development team. “Once your character is done, you can run it, download it and get it ready to be animated in Unreal Engine.”
Achieving ‘photorealism’ was a stated goal of Epic when it launched a new version of the Unreal engine last year.
Epic, now best known as the developer of the game Fortnite, has invested heavily in bringing more realism to its Unreal engine, which is one of the most widely used in the video game industry.
All the research seems to be bearing fruit.
