Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti’s Palm springs was perhaps our favorite new movie of 2020. This may be partly because there was not a lot of competition in that area, but also because it was a nerdier, more expensive, and somehow less cynical Groundhog Day story, a joy to escape into while we are trapped in our own time loop. Therefore, we are excited because Hulu has just released a commentary for the film, not only as an excuse to enjoy the film again, but because it is a big step towards the distribution of titles that will eventually DVD -style extras get.
It’s pretty intentional, by the way. Variety announced the news, along with this insight from Samberg: ‘As far as I know, we are the first. We realized this Palm springs will always be on Hulu, which is great, but there are elements of the DVD experience that just no longer exist. They were very pleasant to talk about ways to get nice things in there. ”
Hulu is not the only streaming service that has started immersing its toes in outdoor DVDs. Disney + has the documentary series behind the scenes of The Mandalorian, and some services attach fans to their titles, though it’s more for seduction than archiving. But if Netflix and Amazon Prime want to start giving people more of a good thing for selected shows and movies, I’m pretty sure everyone will be on board. Like who does not want to watch a bloom after season three of The good place without switching to YouTube?
For now, however, you can Palm springs commentary with Samberg, Milioti, and director Max Barbakow and screenwriter Andy Siara. Hulu even made a trailer for it:
Presumably the whole commentary track is not just people saying pleasant but banal things about the film, but you can find out for yourself – it’s now available on Hulu.
