Hubert Davis as the new head coach of UNC

CHAPEL HILL, NC — Three hours after he was announced as the new head coach of the North Carolina basketball program on Monday, Hubert Davis conducted his first interview in familiar territory. Davis joined the College GameDay show and reunited with some of the crew he worked with at ESPN for seven years, and the ease was immediately apparent.

Amid jokes, personal tears and repeated laughter, Davis answered relevant questions about his Tar Heel story, his path to this job, what it means for him to take over at UNC and how he intends to make his mark on the program to print.

After a notable career at UNC, and then 12 years in the NBA, Davis worked as an analyst at ESPN before Roy Williams recruited him to join the Carolina coaching staff. Davis has spent the past nine seasons as an assistant coach in Williams’ staff with responsibilities including recruiting, banking coaching, reconnaissance, and he has led UNC’s JV group.
