Huawei created a stir among visitors at CES 2019 when it unveiled its emerging foldable phone that does look more futuristic than the prototype Samsung showed. However, much has changed between then and now. While the South Korean giant is now making the best folding products on the market, its Chinese rival has been paralyzed by the US trade embargo. However, Huawei is not giving up and will launch its next folding phone – the Mate X2 – later this month.

The company announced this on Weibo with a message confirming the name of the upcoming phone and bothering its design. The image looks almost intentionally misleading, making us unsure if it displays a screen that folds outward or inward. The original Mate X had the screen on the outside, but it was not the most popular decision, so we would not be surprised if this screen was hidden on the inside when folded.

Little else is known about the phone, but it will likely share hardware with last year’s flagship Mate 40 Pro. The naming scheme also suggests that it will be a drastic upgrade over the Mate Xs, which was announced last year. Huawei has showcased impressive hardware in the past, and we may see more of that with the upcoming launch. But it’s hard to be so excited to know that the phone will probably never get it out of China or use Google apps.
