How veterinary medicine contributes to the advancement of human medicine

Many of the Spanish hospitals have veterinary services that cater to the animals. The animals are rigged by a concrete norm that determines the obligatory existence of the figures of specialists: the person responsible for supervision in situ of welfare and care of animals and the figure of designated veterinary. These functions are usually always performed by veterinary staff, and in practice all the animals, there is a figure of “director / veterinary technician” who coordinates, manages and directs the operation of the installation, as well as all the staff work with animals.

One of the veterinarians working in one of these animals is Angélica Martínez, veterinarian in charge of the Equipo de Cirugía Experimental del Hospital Universitario de Burgos. “My functions within the hospital are very varied, but I can summarize them in the following: participatory form relevant to all phases of the experiment, from the assessment assessment, the experimental design and the preparation of documents for solicitation of authorizations, the inoculations, clinical follow-up, toma and analysis of biological samples, euthanasia and necropsy regulated by the results of animals, principal investigators and teacher instructors ”.

In parallel, the veterinary also develops the specific investigation that is applied directly in the experiments, is the responsible supervisor and supervisor of the training of staff who handle animals with scientific fines, and participate in educational cooperation agreements with children, university students and other activities of senior science with finesse of transparency in the use of animals in scientific research, among other areas.

The veterinary figure hopes that the procedures are in place with guarantees, “and creates a working environment in which respect for animals is a priority”, says the expert.

No obstacle, Angélica Martínez it is always clear that it is dedicated to this framework of the veterinariana, “With the years to the point that when you have a career you have a minimum vision of all the options that our profession has. I was always deceived by the framework of the investigation, (by this hice the Doctoral Thesis), the silver animals and the animal animal, but at the same time the need to explore other camps with the teaching and the divulgation. I do not pursue any objective in concrete terms and I have to leave because I have the illusion to do at any moment, accepting the opportunities that Iban surge. I believe that the most important thing is not to lose the motivation and not close the gates. It is also convenient to have a proactive activity, because always has some bache to avoid ”.

IMPORTATION OF ANIMAL MODEL FOR INVESTMENT

Many people are discussing the importance of animals in biomedical research. We ask Angélica Martínez that we have some examples: “The counters have many examples, but the words, in general, that Modern medicine, including its most innovative oncological treatments and minimally invasive surgical techniques, has not been linked to this point of development and specialization in animal models.. For the mayor’s example, the real context of the pandemic by COVID-19. If animals do not tend to have a safe and effective vaccine ”.

The expert explains to us that, depending on each investigation, there are more models than others. Well, the most used animal model in Spain and in the world is the raton, “Ya que is a very manipulative species and facilitates genetic manipulation, by which uses a variety of human model models such as oncology and autoimmune processes”. Cabe points out that humanized rat models are unmistakable for the development of many vacancies and treatments for various diseases such as COVID-19. “Recently, an article was published about one of the weekly prototypes of our country and its existence in 22 humanized ratios. With the term ‘humanized’ we refer to that its ratios are genetically modified so that the ACE2 human receptor can be expressed ”.

In Spain, according to the latest information from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the rate is 56% of the registered users, has a large number of lesions due to different species of species (17%), for example, it can be used for the investigation of epilepsy and is very important in the studies of functional genomics, the domestic gallbladder (12%), which is used mainly for ethology, animal nutrition and nutrition studies, and rabbits, with 2.5% of registered users.

At the University Hospital of Burgos the most used animals are their rats and cats. Burden ratas present a vascular microanatomy with an adequate caliber for the training of plastic surgery and the cerdos are the ideal models for the training of the rest of the surgical disciplines, as pediatric urology and general surgery, as well as lower extremity techniques as in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery.

On the other hand, Martínez states that the University Hospital of Burgos is a CSUR (Center, Service and Unit of Reference of the National System of Health) of implants, including the catastrophic maneuver, and for this requires a center associated with experimental surgery and program training, the MIR can acquire the competencies specified by the staff of a reference center. It has traversed different levels, focusing on inert materials and living models (muscles and blades) up to date, realizing progressive difficulty techniques to complete its learning.

As such, the veterinarian explains that the use of animals for the training and acquisition of skills is very limited, reaching 1% of the registered users. “The majority of us correspond to basic research (47%), but we still say that many users are interested in translational and applied research on diseases affecting animal diseases (21%)”.

ONE HEALTH

Angélica Martínez is a clear example of the importance of developing the One Health concept and how the veterinary profession contributes to the advancement of human medicine. Due to the lack of application of dicho concept in Spain, the expert maintains the hope that in a very close future the veterinary profession is an integral part of multidisciplinary teams with a public Health approach. ‘We need to make a common front against zoonotic nurses that have no doubt about future futures. For this veterinary staff must be integrated into the National Health System. It’s really disappointing that we have no estimates and yet this pandemic results in more inversibility. For another lado, quisiera result that This pandemic has caused a great deal of controversy over time: the conditions of our personal staff are precarious, that, to nurture the talent and knowledge, the lack of biotechnological infrastructure, staff and investment has hecho that the Spanish vacations vayan to the cola in its development process, which are likely to be ahead of the best working scientists. This is also One Health, and veterinary staff are fundamental to the fact that animal model investigations are conducted with all animal welfare guarantees ”.

“By the way, our profession results invisible to advance in the treatment of the people. However, clinical clinics for individuals are supervised by medical staff, animal clinics are supervised, strictly speaking, by veterinary staff ”, subraya.

TRAYECTORIA

Before attending the University Hospital of Burgos, the veterinary hospital will take up its career in the Department of Animal Health of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Leon, where its doctoral thesis will take place. “During this time I have dedicated myself to the investigation of parasitic diseases of the silver plants with repercussions on animal and human health. Specifically, epidemiology and pathology of parasites with cycles linked to the medium, some of them with zoonotic potential ”.

In addition, he collaborated with the ophthalmology service of the Hospital of Leon and Burgos in the identification of causative larvae of ophthalmomiasis in individuals.

“I would like to thank all my companions and companions, medical staff, nurses, TCAES and celadores of the University Hospital of Burgos for their work, and the respect and admiration that is given to animals and our profession. Especially and represented to all of them, to Dr. José Manuel Gutiérrez Dueñas, jefe del Servicio de Cirugía Pediátrica, por su grand vision, enthusiasm and dedication to this project. From the same form, to all the partners of the Divino Valles Hospital, limpieza staff, receptionists, security and maintenance, and the administrative staff of the Unidad de Investigación, and that his work is immensible for the good functioning of our center Majority of the times is in an invisible work ”.
