LastPass offers a free version of the password manager, but it is limited to only one device type at a time. If you want to switch password managers, Bitwarden offers a free open source service without limits. You can transfer your LastPass passwords to Bitwarden.

Why move from LastPass to Bitwarden

From 16 March 2021, LastPass will change the way its free plan works. You will no longer be able to use the desktop and mobile applications at the same time. If you want to use LastPass on your smartphone and your computer, you have to pay the $ 3 per month plan.

Alternatively, you can switch to Bitwarden. Bitwarden is a secure, open source password manager that offers free access to synchronization and unlimited password entry.

Bitwarden

Bitwarden’s Premium plan costs only $ 10 per year and gives you access to the two-factor authentication feature (including support for hardware keys), emergency access and 1 GB of encrypted storage. Bitwarden is available for every platform you can imagine. You can use the desktop application, browser extensions, mobile applications, web client and even command line tools.

Going from LastPass to Bitwarden is actually pretty easy. All you have to do is generate a CSV file from your LastPass account which you can then import directly into Bitwarden.

Note: The CSV file we generate in this directory will not be encrypted and it contains all your usernames and passwords in plain text. Make sure that you do this process on a reliable and secure computer and that you delete the CSV file completely from your computer as soon as this process is done.

How to execute LastPass passwords

We will start the process by exporting all your usernames and passwords to LastPass in a CSV file.

This process can only be done with the LastPass browser extension. If you are not already using it, you will need to install the LastPass extension.

After the extension is installed and you are logged in to your LastPass account, click on it in the extension bar. If you do not see it in the Chrome extension toolbar, click the extension button (jigsaw) and select the LastPass extension.

Click the “Account Options” button here.

Then go to the “Advanced” section.

You can now start the export process with the “Export” button.

Click on the “LastPass CSV File” option to download the unencrypted CSV file with your usernames and passwords.

Enter your master password from the next page and click the “Continue” button.

LastPass now downloads the CSV file to the local storage of your computer. You can find it at your default download location.

How to enter passwords in Bitwarden

You can start the import process by logging in to Bitwarden. First, open the Bitwarden website in your desktop browser.

If you are not yet involved with Bitwarden, you can create a new account, or log in with your existing account. Go from your Bitwarden safe to the “Tools” section from the top.

Select the “Enter data” option from the sidebar here. Click the menu below the first step and select the “LastPass (CSV)” option.

Then click on the “Select file” option in the second step.

Select the CSV file you downloaded from LastPass and select the “Open” button in the file selector.

Once added, click the “Import Data” button at the bottom of the page.

In a few seconds the data will be entered. You see that the LastPass data appears in your Bitwarden safe.

Now that your LastPass data is available in Bitwarden, you can find it on all your installed devices and browsers.
