The first iOS 14.5 beta includes a number of new features, but there’s also a nice surprise in the release for Spotify users. Follow along to use Spotify as the default of the iPhone if you use Siri. We also discuss how to install the free public iOS 14.5 beta.
The most notable new feature coming to iOS 14.5’s first developer and public beta is support for Apple Watch to unlock the iPhone while wearing a mask. However, another feature that went under the radar until some users on Reddit noticed it is the option to set Spotify as the default for iPhone when using Siri.
We’ve seen before how support comes for Siri to play music when using commands like ‘play Cage the Elephant on Spotify’. However, this latest feature means you do not have to specify Spotify (or any other service) instead of Apple Music.

Curiously, there is no option in Settings> Music (or Settings> Spotify) to set it as the iOS default as we saw with email and browser apps. We’ll have to see if Apple adds a switch for the standard music app in future beta or public releases.
The consistency for Siri with the use of a third-party music service as iOS standard seems to be a bit buggy for now in the first iOS 14.5 beta, so keep YMMV in mind.
How to make Spotify the default of iPhone with iOS 14.5 beta
- Make sure you use the iOS 14.5 beta (public or developed) on your iPhone or iPad
- Ask Siri to play an artist / song / album
- Search for a new popup to choose which service you want to use
- Tap Yes to allow Siri to access data on Spotify (or another app).
- Your music should start playing
- If you work, Spotify or the service you have chosen should be requested to play music via Siri in the future, but it is still scanty and contradictory for some, so you can vary miles
