UPDATE: IO “working hard” to get progress services online again.
Hitman 3 continue the Hitman 2 feature to enter levels from previous entries in the series – so you have access to each area in the Hitman trilogy in one package.
This is of course, provided you have owned previous games on those family platforms – and although physical and digital purchases have different steps, the general process is the same.
Progress and unlocks from Hitman 2 can also be transferred to Hitman 3, which is a higher recommended step to take before starting the game for the first time, otherwise any new progress will be replaced. (UPDATE 15:20 UK time: The site needed to progress between games is currently struggling with demand, with the studio saying on Twitter they are “working hard” to get things back online. For now, IO recommends checking out his Twitter account and not checking their website for updates on when things are backing up again. Until then, you can read the steps on this page to know what is involved.)
If you are reading this before the release time of Hitman 3, now is a good time to download Hitman 2 to ensure levels of the game and the original Hitman will be transferred.

How to enter Hitman levels in Hitman 3
As with Hitman 2, it’s possible to enter levels from previous entries in Hitman 3, allowing you to access every stage from the original Hitman, Hitman 2 and Hitman 3 in a single game, even across console generations.
Developer IO makes this possible by making these respective sets of levels available as DLC, with each game or expansion an ‘Access Pass’. If you purchased a previous Hitman game or DLC, you will have access to the respective Access Pass for that game. If you do not – say if you are a newcomer to the Hitman series with this third instillation – then you can buy it at the store.

These are the basics of how it works – of course, the process between digital and physical versions as well as different editions over the years can get a bit complicated on how to transfer everything. The most important things to note are:
- If you import levels from the original Hitman whether it’s digital or on a disc, make sure you entered it in Hitman 2, and first unlock the ‘Legacy Edition’ in that game. It will then also unlock the Legacy Edition in-store for the platform in Hitman 3. (The official website contains more information on this exact process.)
- If you own only the most important Legacy edition of Hitman 1 (ie the original season) and not the GOTY Legacy Edition (which added Patient Zero and a few extra costumes), you will be automatically upgraded to the latest GOTY edition in Hitman 3.
- If you enter levels from Hitman 2 digitally, the Access Pass will be available immediately in Hitman 3.
- If you enter levels from Hitman 2 on a disk, IO says that you must redeem the Access Pass within Hitman 2 before it will be available in Hitman 3 *. Meanwhile, Xbox owners must also own a digital version of Hitman 3 or the Hitman 2 Free Starter Pack before this will can be redeemed in the Hitman 2 store.
- Hitman 2 Gold Edition and the Hitman 2 expansion will work the same way depending on your physical or digital purchase.
* That said, on PlayStation, I did not need to take this step because Hitman 3 knew I already owned the game. Meanwhile, our own video team, Ian Higton, said he had the disc in the drive and visited Hitman 3‘s shop in the game to make the Hitman 2 access pass appear.

- Finally, pay attention import levels and purchases can only be performed for the console family – PlayStation to PlayStation, Xbox to Xbox, PC to PC – and will work across console generations (hence PS4 to PS5, Xbox One to Xbox Series). The exception during the launch is PC and the Epic Games Store, although the promise is that purchases at various PC stores will be met in a timely manner. Until then, all Hitman 3 purchases within the first ten days in the Epic Games Store have free access to the original Hitman 1 Legacy Edition.
Here’s for example what I did to unlock everything in Hitman 3 on PlayStation. I owned the original season of Hitman and had previously installed Hitman 2 to get the Legacy Edition at the launch of the game, and unlock it in Hitman 3. As mentioned above, although I have Hitman 2 on disk, I apparently do not have to go to the game store within that game to unlock the Access Pass – it only appears on PSN as available. Eventually, my Hitman 2 DLC was purchased digitally, so no action was required.

When done, I can upload Hitman 3 and access all previous levels.
How to transfer your progress from Hitman 2 to Hitman 3
While transferring progression feels less urgent than sorting out your levels and purchases from previous games, it’s probably more important because it means continuing the unlocking and experience you gain in Hitman 2, including the levels from the original Hitman. which was played in that sequel.
If you do this after you start playing Hitman 3, you’re replacing all the progress you’ve made, it is therefore recommended to do this before you start. It’s also something you can prepare for before you play the game – useful if you wait until your download is complete.
(UPDATE 15:20 UK time: The site needed to progress between games is currently struggling with demand, with the studio saying on Twitter they are “working hard” to get things back online. For now, IO recommends checking out his Twitter account and not checking their website for updates on when things are backing up again. Until then, you can read the steps below to know what is involved.)

Items transferred include:
- Hitman 2 profile rank
- Space Mastery XP and unlock from all levels played in Hitman 2
- Complete Challenges and Unlocking Levels Played in Hitman 2
- Any elusive target packs and rewards from Hitman 2
Things that will not be transferred include:
- Save files
- Rewards from the escalations of Hitman’s Game of the Year 1
- Access to the ICA Electrocution Phone item (not available in Hitman 3)

To transfer your progress from Hitman 2 to Hitman 3, you must visit this official website, log in to your IO account and follow the instructions. Although the game will prompt you to do so the first time you play Hitman 3, and open the site in the game, you can do so on another device – such as a phone or computer – if you prefer.
Note that progression is only transmitted within the family of platforms (PlayStation to PlayStation, Xbox to Xbox, PC to PC) and therefore you can not make any progress with the Switch version (which is technically the first on that platform).
Also know that the progress of the original Hitman will not be transferred, but that everything played in Hitman 2 – including the Legacy Hitman 1 levels that will be played in the sequel – will be transferred, because it is part of the Hitman 2-profile.
Finally, you need to know that you can only do this once. Practically, this means that if you continue to play Hitman 2, any new progress made in the game cannot be transferred. And to repeat it, it’s important to do it all before you play Hitman 3, as the unlock there will be overwritten by anything you made of Hitman 2.
There is a lot to take in and possibly do before you can play Hitman 3 with everything you own and unlock – so the sooner you do, the faster you can get started with the new game, which we described as a satisfying ending a beautiful stealth trilogy “in our Hitman 3 review.
