Valheim is on fire as the latest survival game sensation on Steam – and it’s only in Early Access!
To play online, you have several options – including presenting your own multiplayer lobby with friends, and creating a dedicated Valheim server.
Here’s how to create a dedicated Valheim server or host multiplayer games with friends.
How to present Valheim Multiplayer
To play Valheim online with a small group of friends, you do not need to go the extra mile to host a dedicated Valheim server.
Here’s how you can simply present a multiplayer game in Valheim to your friends.
- Create your world (and pair it with a random or custom seed)
- Go to the Start World tab, check the options for Start Server and Community Server
- Enter your server password and press Start

Valheim Dedicated Servers
Valheim servers have a password system by default, which means there are no traditional public servers.
Instead, players should go looking for Valheim servers or create their own.
If you keep this in mind, you can offer a dedicated server for Valheim.

Valheim Dedicated Server System Requirements
There are no hard and fast rules for hosting a dedicated Valheim server in terms of what your computer needs.
However, there are some recommendations, such as a strong CPU to handle the constant charge.
If you have a powerful computer, you will probably be able to run your Valheim server on it while playing the game, just keep in mind if you are having problems, the server will go down for everyone else.
If this is not the case then maybe your Valheim server is running on another computer, but you just need to make sure that it stays on and that the server stays open.
