Google’s media streaming offerings got a pretty significant bump last year in the form of the Chromecast with Google TV. Unlike its predecessors, the dongle is based on Android TV and there are many things for it, including the remote and $ 50 price. Unfortunately, it was not all smooth. Many users have recently reported an error asking them to randomly reset the device as ‘data may be corrupted’.

The problem has been highlighted by different users on different platforms, including Twitter, Reddit, and even on Google’s own forums. It comes up randomly and renders the remote control useless, making it difficult for users to bypass it.

There is no official word on what caused the startup screen to appear for users, but we suspect it may have caused an error in the system update. Since the device does automatic “seamless” updates, this can happen without any input from the user.

Do not worry, there is an easy solution

If you encounter this error, the most natural thing to do is navigate the interface with the remote control. However, this will not be possible as the device is in recovery mode, and you have to use the single button on the back of the dongle – a big task if your TV is on the wall and the Chromecast is hidden behind it.

You can see the button in the picture above.

With a single press of this button you can scroll through the options, while with one long press you can select one. It is recommended to click “Retry” if you encounter this error. This should recharge the device and resolve the issue. But if this does not work for you, you will need to perform a factory data recovery, which is the only other option on the screen.

We’ve reached Google for the error and we’ll update the article when we hear it.
