How to execute and delete stored passwords in Chrome

Google Chrome Hero

Google Chrome’s built-in password manager is better than nothing, but it’s not the most secure. If you plan to go to a dedicated password manager, you can safely retrieve and delete saved passwords from Chrome.

We recommend that you use a dedicated password manager to store and synchronize all your usernames and passwords on your devices. This is not only more secure but also convenient because you can generate strong passwords for all your accounts. Once set up, you only need to remember the master password for the password manager of your choice.

With all popular password managers like LastPass, 1Password, Dashlane and Bitwarden you can enter passwords from Chrome. All you have to do is import the CSV file generated from Chrome.

Export saved passwords from Chrome

Let us first export all your saved passwords from Chrome. To get started, open the Chrome browser on your computer. Click here on your profile icon in the toolbar and select the password button. Alternatively, you can enter the “chrome: // settings / passwords” path in the URL bar and press the Enter or Return key.

Go to the “Saved passwords” section here and click on the three-point menu button on the right.

Now select the option “Export Passwords”.

Click the “Export Passwords” button in the pop-up window.

Your computer may ask you to verify your identity with the password associated with your Windows 10 or Mac user account. Enter the password and click the “OK” button.

Select the destination for the CSV file and click the “Save” button.

After downloading the file, you will find it in the file system of your computer (Windows Explorer or Finder). You can now easily import the CSV file to a password manager like Bitwarden.

Warning: The CSV file you download from Chrome contains all your usernames and passwords in an unencrypted, plain text format. Make sure you complete this export process on a trusted computer.

Remove saved passwords from Chrome

Now that you’ve done saving your passwords, it’s time to remove them from Chrome. There is a one-click method to delete all passwords stored in Chrome and synced across all your devices with your Google Account.

To do so, click the three-point menu button in the Chrome toolbar and select the “Settings” option.

Select the “Privacy and security” option in the “Privacy and security” section.

Go to the “Advanced” tab and select the “All times” option in the “Time Range” drop-down menu.

Scroll down and check the “Passwords and other login details” option. Click the “Clear data” button.

All passwords stored in Chrome and your Google Account will be removed immediately.
