Apple in the iOS 14.5 beta has added a new option to change the default music player, a feature that will undoubtedly appeal to non-Apple Music fans.
Changing music standards has not yet been fully identified, but if you are a beta user who prefers third-party music services, you can set it as the Siri standard after updating to iOS 14.5.
How to set up your default music service using Siri
- Updated to iOS 14.5 or iPadOS 14.5 on the iPad.
- Ask Siri to play an artist, song or album with a request like “Hey Siri, play Fleetwood Mac.”
- Siri will upload a list of all music apps you have installed and ask, “Which app do you want to use?”
- Choose your preferred music app from the list.
- Confirm, if requested, Siri has access to data from your music application.
- From there, Siri plays the music in your app that you prefer. For example, if you select Spotify, the music content will play in Spotify.
Siri will tell you which music program was selected when the song was playing, and you can also see an icon of the music program in the Now Playing window.
It is possible to play music from other services by making it clear which service you want to use Siri, such as ‘Hey Siri, play music on Spotify’, but the change implemented in iOS 14.5 makes Siri your music app that you prefer, as simple command as “Hey Siri play music” will use your favorite app rather than providing Apple Music.
Note that if you do not see the option to select a default music service, you may need to restart your device. Some users have also reported that they are unable to reveal the setting, so it is possible that not all users will see it in this beta.
How to change your default music service
At this time, there is no Siri musiek command or music setting to manually change the default music app you set through the manuallySiri interface.
You can ask Siri to play music on another music service, and sometimes it will change the default. So if you set Spotify as your default mode but want to switch back to Apple Music, you can say “Hey Siri, play Fleetwood Mac on Apple Music”, or vice versa: “Hey Siri, play Fleetwood Mac on Spotify.”
This will sometimes change the default music setting, but it is not completely reliable. You can sometimes make the list appear again by quickly asking each other about different services or when downloading a new music service app, but if you now want a hassle-free experience, you need to set it to the music service you use mostly.
We expect Apple to expand the feature further in future beta, so there’s probably a link to set up a music app like iOS on iOS, similar to how the default email and browser settings work.
