How to automatically resume applications when you sign in to Windows 10

Sometimes you’re in the middle of a productive session in Windows 10, but you need to log off or restart your computer. Normally you have to start your session all over again. But with a quick change in Settings, Windows can automatically remember and reopen your non-legacy programs when you log in again. Here’s how to set it up.

First open Windows settings. To do this, click on the Start menu and select the small gear icon, or press Windows + i on your keyboard.

Click ‘Accounts’ in ‘Settings.’

In “Accounts” click on “Login Options” in the sidebar.

In the Login options, scroll down to the page until you see the “Restart apps” option. Turn the switch just below it until it is set to “On”.

Then close Settings.

The next time you log out and log back in, what Microsoft calls your “reboot programs” will automatically reload. This is the application of application developers to restart their programs, so it may not work with all programs. However, it includes modern Windows 10 programs written for the UWP platform – which includes all applications in the Microsoft Store – as well as modern browsers.

Older programs (using the Win32 API) that were written before Windows 8 before Windows 8 may not start automatically. Still, it’s very handy!
