How it started … how it goes: Phil Foden shares a picture of ball boy days after Liverpool heroism

How it started … how it goes: Phil Foden shares a setback photo of himself as a ball boy at the Etihad, along with one of his brilliant fourth goals in Manchester City’s stunning win over Liverpool

  • Manchester City beat Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday
  • Phil Foden delivers a brilliant performance by scoring his team’s fourth goal
  • The midfielder has established himself as one of the best young players in the world

Phil Foden was the star of the series when Manchester City beat Liverpool 4-1 on Sunday and he took to Twitter to remind fans how far he had come after the game.

The 20-year-old put on a great performance by defeating his team’s fourth goal when they scored their first win at Anfield in 18 years.

He then shared two photos side by side, one of him as a ball boy in a City game in 2014 and one of him scoring his goal against the Reds.

Following the recent social media trend, he wrote ‘how it starts … how it goes’.

Liverpool’s title defense apparently ended at the feet of goalkeeper Alisson Becker, as two horrific errors helped City secure their big win.

With the equalizer at 1-1 with 17 minutes remaining, the Brazilian forward has twice taken care of the league leaders – including the first of Raheem Sterling at Anfield since his departure in 2015.

Alisson was back in the squad after missing the defeat to Brighton in the middle of the week, but he will be sick if he looks at his share of City’s first win on the field since 2003 and only their second in 34 visits.

Mohamed Salah’s 63rd-minute penalty – which ended a nine-minute drought in less than seven hours at home – canceled out the starting batsman Ilkay Gundogan, who saved himself, after missing the spot in the first half.

Alisson then hit a pass straight at Phil Foden, who drove forward and crossed for Gundogan to score nine goals in his last 11 league games.

The worst was to follow, as the Brazilian repeated the mistake even closer to goal with Bernardo Silva uploading Sterling to nod his 100th goal for Pep Guardiola, with Foden later adding the finishing touch.

Victory extended City’s winning run to 14 games, leaving Liverpool ten points behind after playing one more game, and even in this season of surprises, a return from the position seems unlikely.

That meant Gundogan’s penalty kicks late in the first half – City’s third place this season and their third in four attempts in this game – and Guardiola kicking a bucket in frustration were a distant memory
