Houston’s first COVID-19 vaccination system opens

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Against the backdrop of a milestone in the COVID-19 vaccination effort in the city, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner set a bad record on Monday, recalling the urgent need for vaccinations expand to high-risk residents.

The 3,039 new cases reported by Turner are the most recorded for a single day in the city during the course of the pandemic.

However, the statistic has certain conditions. According to Turner, the number comes from an adjustment of affairs of the past three days.

Yet the city has so far counted more than 148,500 cases of the coronavirus. Houston’s positivity rate stands at 17%.

City’s first drive-through vaccination site

With a numerical reminder of the impact of the virus on the city in mind, Turner and other city leaders ushered in Houston’s first vaccination at Del Mar Stadium, where 1,600 doses of the Moderna vaccine were given.

Turner added that the health department in Houston received 9,000 extra doses last Friday.

“We work to vaccinate as many people as possible based on supply. I know there is a lot of anxiety in the community because people are worried that they can not make an appointment. We know that the demand is greater than the supply of vaccine, ‘Turner said.

The driveway is in partnership with United Memorial Medical Center. People considered in high-risk phases 1A and 1B qualify for vaccinations with appointments.

“As we receive more vaccine, we will expand partnerships with pharmacies and federally qualified health centers to ensure the vaccine is available in the most vulnerable communities and deploy mobile strike teams if necessary,” Turner added.
