The legislation, which has already been passed on in pieces from individual committees, has been packaged by the House Budget Committee.
The panel will take up the bill on Monday and it is expected to come to the House floor later next week for a vote.
Democrats have a slim margin to pass the bill, and Republican leaders have already begun whipping up their members against it, arguing it spends too much money.
The House bill is very similar to President Joe Biden’s rescue plan and includes more money for schools, vaccine distribution and funding for state and local governments.
The bill is not expected to attract much, if any, Republican support. House minority whip Steve Scalise in an email on Friday urged Republicans to vote “no” on what his office speaker Nancy Pelosi calls the House’s Payoff to Progressives Act.
“Clearly, Democrats have no interest in approaching COVID relief in a timely and purposeful manner, but rather use the reconciliation process to push through their liberal wish list agenda,” Scalise’s office wrote.
Hours later, Pelosi’s office pushed back the republic’s characterization.
“While millions of Americans are unemployed and seeking relief from reopening schools and getting people back to work, the Republican leadership demands that members vote against a two-party plan to help struggling Americans,” her office said. said an email. “Americans need help. House Republicans don’t care.”
Once the House passes the legislation, it will then go to the Senate, where Democrats have the least possible majority. The expectation is that some pieces of the bill will have to be changed to accommodate the rules for the budget process, known as reconciliation, which will allow Democrats in the Senate to pass the bill with just a simple majority. The Senate has a party split of 50-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris able to step in and serve as a ballot.
Pelosi said earlier that she expects the Covid-19 emergency relief package to be on Biden’s desk by March 14, when some unemployment benefits expire.
