Newaygo police officers were sent to Newaygo High School at 8:52 a.m. for an explosion in a classroom, the Western Michigan Department in Michigan said in a Twitter thread.

A preliminary investigation by police has established that a 16-year-old student accidentally detonated a homemade explosive device he had brought to school. The blast injured the student and four other classmates.

Officials at Newaygo High School immediately called 911 and evacuated the school and moved students to a bus garage when emergency personnel arrived on the scene. All schools in the province were temporarily closed as part of the province’s plan for emergency operations until police determined there was no further threat to students.

The 16-year-old was taken to hospital for moderate to severe injuries, while four others were taken to hospital by their parents for minor injuries. The classroom teacher also sought treatment at the hospital.

Peg Mathis, superintendent of Newaygo Public Schools, said the 16-year-old had a “serious lack of judgment”.

“It was not someone who planted an explosive device to hurt our students,” Mathis said in a Facebook post.

She added that students will be sent home for the day due to the ‘smell and smoke in high school’.

Newaygo County Emergency Services told parents to go to the bus garage at 70 East Street to pick up their children, but that K-8 students would stay in school as usual for the day and be released at the normal time.
