Here’s what you need to know on April 17, 2021

DETROIT The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan rose to 779,777 from Friday, including 16,771 deaths, state officials said.

Friday’s update contains a total of 8,955 new cases and 40 additional deaths. On Thursday, the state reported 770,822 cases and 16,731 deaths.

This is the second highest single day total in Michigan since the beginning of the pandemic.

The test reported an average of about 35,000 diagnostic tests per day, with the 7-day positive rate above 15% as of Thursday, almost the highest we have ever recorded. Hospitalizations have increased over the past few weeks, now at the peak of the pandemic.

Michigan continues to lead the country in new COVID-19 cases. The state’s moving average for 7 days for daily business was 6,789 on Thursday – the highest since November. The 7-day mortality rate was 51 on Wednesday, slightly higher than the past two weeks. The death rate of the state is 2.2%. The state also reports ‘active cases’ listed at 169,000 on Thursday. More than 587,000 recovered in Michigan.

Michigan has more than reported 5.5 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine administered from Thursday, with 43% of inhabitants received at least one dose.

According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 31.5 million cases reported in US., with more than 565,000 deaths of the virus reported.

Michigan has the COVID-19 order that has implemented restrictions on events, restaurants, venues and more.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has extended the epidemic order until May 24. It has also expanded the mask requirements to include children aged 2-4 years.

“Michigan continues to implement smart health policies and mitigation measures to combat the spread of COVID-19,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “These include the requirement to wear a mask while in public and gatherings, restrictions on indoor social gatherings greater than 15 people with no more than three households, and extensive testing requirements for youth sports.”

The director of the CDC said the answer to Michigan’s worrying increase in COVID-19 cases is not to ‘graft our way out of it’, but to ‘close things’ as the state did last spring and summer.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, spoke Monday about the COVID-19 situation in Michigan.

On Friday, Government Gretchen Whitmer Michigan called a ‘COVID hotspot’ and called on the federal government to push for additional vaccines here in response to increasing cases.

Michigan Government Gretchen Whitmer and the state health department is asking residents to follow certain voluntary COVID-19 restrictions, such as avoiding indoor eateries, suspending sports and returning to distance education.

Whitmer and dr. Joneigh Khaldun, Medical Director of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, talked about the disturbing COVID-19 trends in Michigan.

“I am very concerned about what we see in our data,” Khaldun said. “We are on track to see an increase in cases even greater than those we saw in the fall.”

The city of Detroit is launching eight COVID-19 information sites in the area, contributing to the expansion at TCF Center, to combat serious cases and hospitalizations in the city.

The Detroit vaccination rate (Monday 21%) is well below neighboring areas and the general average, which is 35%. The city is expanding the options for residents with an urgent message: Get vaccinated.

Next week, the city offers eight additional locations throughout the week, in addition to community Saturdays and other outreach programs, to give Detroiters the opportunity to be vaccinated in a comfortable and familiar place near home.

All Michigan residents aged 16 and older were eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine on April 5, almost a month before the date that President Joe Biden promised on May 1st.

People aged 16 to 49 with certain medical conditions or disabilities qualify from 22 March. when 50- to 64-year-olds can start shooting under a previous announcement. Two days later, March 24, a federally selected local mass vaccination center will open in Detroit’s Ford Field to administer an additional 6,000 doses per day for two months.

The COVID-19 variant detected in Brazil has been identified in Bay County. The variant is known as the P1 strain and is more contagious and more than 50% can be re-infected.

The person infected in Bay County and the people they were in contact with will need to be quarantined for 14 days. It is unclear what effect this will have on those, including the elderly, who have already been vaccinated, as there is not enough research to know exactly.

Government Gretchen Whitmer released a statement on Tuesday after White House officials announced that the dose of COVID-19 vaccine for Michigan would increase from next week.

According to a press release, delivery will increase by 66,020 next week, increasing the total dose to 620,040 – a weekly record for the state. Officials said the award includes 147,800 doses of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

This comes after Whitmer recently asked for more vaccines because the state is seeing an increase in COVID numbers.

The CDC said Michigan leads the country in new cases of COVID-19 per capita.

On Tuesday, officials reported 5,177 new COVID cases and 48 additional deaths, including 20 from a Vital Records review. The state reported 660,771 cases and 16,034 deaths on Monday.

Local dr. Frank McGeorge, 4, said he sees a very clear increase in COVID patients in the hospital where he works.

‘Many of them have to be admitted to hospital. I will honestly say it feels worse to me here in Southeast Michigan than during the wave that started in November. The main trend now is the number of middle-aged people with severe COVID, ‘McGeorge said.

The Department of Health and Human Services in Michigan has announced that the first case of the COVID-19 variant B.1.351 has been identified in a child in Jackson County.

The health department did not say how the boy was infected, but a case is being investigated to determine close contacts and whether there are additional cases related.

This new variant was originally detected in South Africa in October 2020 and shares mutations with the B117 variant. The first case of the B117 variant – originally detected in the United Kingdom – has been identified in Washtenaw County.
