  • LG will continue to provide software updates to certain phones in certain regions even after the mobile section is turned off.
  • Android 12 may also be on the map for some LG phones.
  • However, the company’s plans were not set in stone.

LG has officially shut down its smartphone business, and while that means we will not see any new LG phones in the future, the company has not completely dropped its existing devices. Not just yet.

The firm noted in its press release that it will continue to provide software updates to its phones and that these updates will vary by region.

Separately, the company also provided more clarity on its Korean website (h / t XDA Developers) regarding software support plans for its phones.

According to LG (machine translation), the Android 11 update is currently underway for certain models, as announced earlier. Some LG phones will also be upgraded to Android 12. However, the OS update plans depend on Google’s distribution schedule, product performance and product stabilization.

The company also plans to continue providing security updates to its phones, but says it may change its policy at any time in the future.

In essence, LG’s software support plans are in the air. You might get the Android 12 update on your LG Velvet or Wing, but now be not too sure about that.

As the mobile division is undergoing a major transition, we would not be surprised if some of the promised updates are also delayed. LG also does not have an excellent record when it comes to timely software updates. Its devices are usually upgraded months after their counterpart, and we expect these schedules to become even more uncertain going forward.

Asked about the matter, Ken Hong said Android Authority, “Yes, future Android updates will be available for some phones in certain markets, although I do not know if the US is included in the list.”

The official pointed us to the US team for more information on software updates for LG phones in the region. We will update this article as and when we receive a response from the company.
