Wednesday’s COVID-19 update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) contains 1,715 new cases and 16 new deaths.
The new deaths increase the death toll from the state to 6,978 in the course of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 61.9% (4,320) were residents of long-term care.
As of April 12, the state reported that 2,131,904 people had received at least 1 dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 1,460,806 people had completed their vaccination series.
Forty-eight percent of Minnesotans 16 years and older received at least one shot, while 84% of the 65-year-old population had at least one dose of vaccine. Overall, 38% of the state’s population had at least one dose.

Hospitalizations
As of April 13, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 681, which is higher than 676 reported Tuesday.
Of those admitted to the hospital, 164 people were in intensive care (up from 159 were reported Tuesday) and 517 received non-ICU treatment (no change from 517).

Test and positivity figures
The 1,715 positive results in Wednesday’s update were from 24,033 completed tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of 7.13%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s positivity rate over the past seven days is 7.32%.
The World Health Organization recommends that a percentage positive rate (total positive divided by total completed tests) of at least two weeks below 5% is needed to safely reopen the economy. The 5% threshold is based on total positive share through total tests.
