Monday’s COVID-19 update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) contains 1,994 new cases and two new deaths.
The new deaths increase the death toll from the state to 6,950 in the course of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 62.4% (4,319) were residents of long-term care, including one of the youngest two deaths.
As of April 10, the state reported that 2,084,657 people had received at least 1 dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 1,420,328 people had completed their vaccination series.
Forty-seven percent of Minnesotans 16 years and older received at least one shot, while 84% of the 65-year-old population had at least one dose of vaccination. Overall, 37% of the state’s population had at least one dose.

Hospitalizations
As of April 11, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 651, which is higher than 595 reported Friday.
Of those admitted to the hospital, 161 were in intensive care (compared to 134 reported Thursday) and 490 received non-ICU treatment (compared to 461).

Test and positivity rates
The 1,994 positive results in Monday’s update were from 24,001 completed tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of 8.3%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s test positivity rate over the past seven days is 7.07%.
The World Health Organization recommends that a percentage positive rate (total positive divided by total completed tests) of at least two weeks below 5% is needed to safely reopen the economy. The 5% threshold is based on total positive share through total tests.

* Probable deaths are patients who died after testing positive using the COVID-19 antigen test, which is thought to be less accurate than the more common PCR test.
