Here’s how Aaron Rodgers locked up the MVP award besides achieving this rare achievement in Week 16

Aaron Rodgers is in a fierce race with Patrick Mahomes for the NFL MVP award and he may have finally taken the lead with a week left in the regular season. Rodgers again achieved a dominant performance in the Green Bay Packers’ victory over the Tennessee Titans, 21 of 25 (84%) with 241 yards with four touchdowns and an interception – with a pass rate of 128.1.

Rodgers achieved a rare NFL performance with Sunday’s performance, a way to win his third MVP award. Rodgers had his 13th game in 2020 with a whopping 100 passer awards, which was tied for most of those games in a single season in the Super Bowl era. The only other two backs to reach this milestone are Rodgers (2011) and Patrick Mahomes (2018) – and both won the MVP award in their respective seasons.

Rodgers is having an incredible season for the top Packers in the NFC, finishing second in the NFL in his completion percentage (70.3%), fifth in the passing yardage (4,059), and first in assessments (44) and a pass rate (119.4). That comes with Green Bay receivers dropping 6.5% of Rodgers’ throw this season, the most in the NFL. Rodgers throws 77.1% of his passes on the target (throws that would hit the intended receiving target), third in the league.

Rodgers became the third player in NFL history, with two seasons of 44 plus passes, joining Peyton Manning and Dan Marino. He finished his 29th career game with four passing touchdowns, the fourth most since 1950. Rodgers is the only quarterback in NFL history with several seasons of 40 plus touchdowns and fewer than ten distinctions, scoring the feat three times (2011, 2016, 2020). He won the MVP award in 2011 while reaching the point.

MVP chance

According to the owners of the William Hill Sportsbook, Rodgers took an advantage in the MVP race. Rodgers entered Week 16 with a +190 chance of winning the MVP award, with Mahomes the favorite at -240. The odds lasted a full 180 after Mahomes scored just 24 of 44 (54.6%) for 278 yards with two touchdowns and an interception (79.5 rating) when the Kansas City Chiefs squeaked through the Atlanta Falcons . Kansas City had its tenth time in the fourth quarter in 2020, tying the NFL record for comeback wins in the Super Bowl era.

How much has the MVP chance changed? Suppose Rodgers is the best favorite in the last week.

  1. Aaron Rodgers (-220)
  2. Patrick Mahomes (+ 180)
  3. Josh Allen (+1400)
  4. Derrick Henry (+5000)
  5. Davante Adams (+7500)

Mahomes was at -350 for the award after week 12, while Rodgers was +500. Rodgers completed 76.03% of his passes in December for 959 meters with 11 touchdowns to one interception (125.3 rating), while Mahomes completed 60% of his passes for 1,243 meters with eight touchdowns to four distinctions (89 , 5). The hot month by Rodgers – along with the Packers taking over the leading position in the conference – is why he is the MVP favorite by foreigners.

If Rodgers has a good final season in Week 17, a third MVP award will be added to his trophy.
