Heavy rains bring flash floods to parts of Miami-Dade and Broward, causing daily commuters

MIAMI Parts of South Florida are still drowning after thunderstorms flooded the region Tuesday, prompting a flood warning for Miami and a flood warning for other areas.

Pouring rain soaked Miami for several hours, starting Tuesday around 3 p.m. Sometimes the rainfall figures were two to three centimeters per hour.

According to Doppler radar estimates, rainfall in and around Miami, Miami Beach and Surfside has fallen from four to six inches of rain.

Cars kicked up standing water in downtown Miami as they drove through North Miami Avenue near Northeast 20th Street.

The Edgewater area is experiencing continuous flooding when heavy weather strikes again, and on Tuesday from Biscayne Boulevard and 23rd Street it was no different. Parked cars can get stuck in a few inches of water.

After a day full of rain on Miami Beach, cars were still drowning roads to drive their evening shuttle.

A strong thunderstorm also drenched Broward County and prompted the National Weather Service to issue flood advice for some neighborhoods. Pompano Beach measured more than an inch of rain on Tuesday.

The storms also left thousands of people in Broward without water service after lightning struck the county’s main pumping station, leading to thousands of homes being notified of boiling water.

Local 10 chief certified meteorologist Betty Davis says a slow-moving cold front is interacting with the hot, humid air over South Florida. The end result is rounds of rain.

The front will still be in the vicinity of South Florida and the Keys Tuesday through Wednesday. The region may get more showers and thunderstorms.
