Heavy impact winter storm

The next winter storm is approaching and by this evening we are starting to feel the effects. Most of the Sunday will be when it starts … cloudy and cold. Temperatures run about 5-10 degrees below freezing and a light wind makes it feel like the low to upper teens.

The program begins tonight. An initial wave of snow and icy rain is coming from the west. Precipitation rates will increase as we move to Monday morning, where roads will have consequences. Due to ice that is still on surfaces and the temperature is below freezing, it will not be long before snow accumulates. Rapid accumulation will occur even on roads, as surface temperatures remain low and below freezing. Bridges, trespasses, turning lanes and shoulders collect the fastest snow. Travel will be affected early Monday morning and will continue throughout the day. Ice also has a chance of accumulating in the southeastern provinces, where temperatures will rise above freezing. The initial wave brings 1 to 3 “of snow and about 0.10” of ice accumulation. Impacts will be felt with wave one, but larger impacts will occur in the second wave.

A brief break in the action will take place late Monday morning and early afternoon. This calmness will separate the initial group from the second wave. Golf two will start in the middle of the afternoon on Monday and it is offering snow, sleet and icy rain again. Heavy showers with high rainfall will continue until Tuesday morning. This second series will bring for most places another 4 to 6 inches of snow and ice for southeastern provinces 0.25 inches of ice.

Travel will become almost impossible for most areas starting Monday night and lasting at least until Tuesday morning. Power outages are also possible. This is a system where you have to stay off the road at all costs. Wherever you are on Monday morning, this is where you will stay at least Tuesday morning. Treated roads will improve through the day on Tuesday. It will take a few days before untreated roads recover.

That being said, we are looking at snow of 6 to 8 inches with local amounts possible. A rainstorm in areas between snow and icy rain. Ice accumulations between 0.10 ”and 0.50” are possible for eastern and south-eastern provinces.
