This is the heartwarming moment when a black Staffordshire terrier rescued her doggy girlfriend from drowning in a swimming pool in the backyard of South Africa.

CCTV footage shows the black pooch running to rescue the smaller toy Pomeranian who fell into the water after slipping on the edge of the pool in Boksburg City on April 8.

The seven-year-old Staffie dog named Jessie, who feels her friend is in danger, repeatedly walks around the pool and reaches into the water to try to reach 13-year-old white puppy Chucky while struggling to keep his head above water.

Jessie, a black Staffordshire terrier, was caught on her owner's circuit television and her hairy friend Chucky pulled out of their pool after he collapsed.

The outdoor footage shows Chucky walking safely along the pool before being distracted by something in the garden and sliding up the steps of the pool.

He stirs furiously in the water to try to keep his head above water before Jessie quickly comes to overload to help.

The heroic female pooch plunges into the water to grab Chucky, but his wet fur repeatedly slips from her mouth and he falls in again.

After several failed attempts, she uses all her strength after 34 minutes to drag the exhausted dog to safety before moving away together.

Chucky was not injured in the incident, but the dog owners are worried about what happened when they saw the two poo wet.

The owner of the pet, Byron Thanarayen, said he and his wife Melissa watched the security camera next to the pool to see what the two dogs might have done.

He said: ‘We tried to look for clues where he could wet his head. We thought he might have dipped his head in the water, but there was no mess in the house to support this proposal.

“It was sad to watch. We still struggle today to watch the video and just think about what could have happened if Jessie had not been there. ‘

After the stressful ordeal, the couple gets away in the garden and seems intact about what happened.

Byron added that the heroic dog was a restless rescue dog that the couple adopted four years ago.

The couple is her third adopted family after her previous foster parents returned her to the shelter.

Mr. Thanarayen said previous owners complained that Jessie was having trouble with other animals, but ‘she got along right with the other two dogs’.

He added: ‘I’m really proud of her as she’s the youngest. Our dogs know how to swim, but they always swim with us and not when we are not with them. ‘

To prevent similar incidents from happening in the future, the couple is now hiring workers to install a cover for their pool.
