Hawaiian Gardens Hospital wants to employ 100 people amid reopening as COVID treatment center

HAWAIIAN GARDENS, California (KABC) – A hospital that was previously closed in Hawaiian Gardens held a rental event on Saturday morning after a recent reopening as a COVID-19 treatment center.

The 137-bed Pacific Gardens Medical Center wants to employ 100 skilled and unskilled nurses and other staff, including food services and domestic workers.

Newly hired employees will assist the emergency room, the intensive care unit and the coronavirus treatment unit.

The hospital must also fill positions in its pharmacy, surgery and radiology department, officials said.

Marilyn Evans of Pasadena hopes she’s among those who will be hired. Recently, she has been working with COVID-19 patients.

‘They’re there alone, we’re constantly busy with families or telephoning with families, it’s making it a little difficult, but that’s what we’re for, to give them kind of hope and tell them, keep pushing , ‘she said.

The medical center, which closed in 2017 after struggling financially, was reopened earlier this week as part of an effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in the surrounding community. The hospital’s new owners spent more than $ 20 million on the renovation.

“It’s a big business,” said David Diamond, a spokesman for the facility. “It requires all of our support staff. There are heroes in the building. These are people who have given up a large part of their own personal lives for something that they believe is incredibly important to the community.”

The facility hopes to be fully staffed by mid-April. Evans knows that this opportunity can also help a struggling community for her.

“There is a question and I will meet it every day. I just pray that I will stay healthy to be able to work,” Evans said.

Saturday’s job fair was completed, but more applications would be accepted Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pacific Gardens Medical Center, 21530 South Pioneer Boulevard in Hawaiian Gardens.
