Hawaii sees 41 new coronavirus infections while total score rises to 28,892

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported 41 new coronavirus infections, bringing the total of the state to 28,892 cases since the start of the pandemic.

State health officials have not reported any new coronavirus-related deaths as the death toll in the country remains at 454.

The state’s official death toll includes 361 deaths on Oahu, 53 on Hawaii Island, 36 on Maui, one on Kauai and three Hawaii residents who died outside the state.

The U.S. coronavirus-related death toll today is more than 543,000 and the nationwide infection is more than 29.9 million.

According to health officials, 28 new cases of infection across the country are 28 on Oahu, eight on Maui, one on Hawaii Island, one on Lanai, three Hawaii residents diagnosed outside the state.

The statistics released today reflect the new infection cases reported to the department on Sunday.

The total number of coronavirus cases per island since the onset of the outbreak is 22,638 on Oahu, 2,637 on Maui, 2,385 in Hawaii, 187 on Kauai, 110 on Lanai and 33 on Molokai. There are also 902 residents of Hawaii who have been diagnosed outside the state.

Health officials also said today that 885 cases of the state’s total infection count are considered active. Officials say they regard infections reported over the past 14 days as a ‘proxy number for active cases’. The number of active cases in the state decreased by one today.

On the island, Oahu has 500 active cases, Maui has 280, the Big Island has 96, Molokai has six, Kauai has one and Lanai has two.

Health officials counted 4,296 new COVID-19 test results in the current score, with a positive percentage of 0.95 nationwide. The state’s 7-day average positivity rate is 1.5%, according to the Hawaii COVID-19 Data dashboard.

The COVID-19 vaccine summary in Hawaii said today that 547,891 vaccines were administered out of the 691,050 that the state received. About 23.8% of the general population in Hawaii received at least one dose of the vaccine. Of those who have received at least one vaccine dose so far, 49% are 59 years or younger, while 51% are 60 years or older. Of the vaccines administered, 523,019 were given to the general public and 24,872 were distributed via the federal pharmacy program, officials said.

Of all the confirmed cases of Hawaii infection, 1,957 required hospitalizations, with four new hospitalizations reported today by state health officials.

Eight hospitalizations in the census are residents of Hawaii who have been diagnosed and treated outside the state. Of the 1,949 hospitalizations in the state, 1,670 were on Oahu, 160 on Maui, 105 on the Big Island, eight on Kauai, five on Lanai and one on Molokai.

According to the latest information from the department’s COVID-19 Data dashboard, a total of 30 patients with the virus were in Hawaii hospitals as of Monday morning, with seven in intensive care units and five in ventilators.

Oahu moved to the less restrictive Level 3 of the city’s four-level economic recovery plan on Feb. 25 after being in Level 2 since Oct. 22. Level 3 allows for social and outdoor recreational gatherings of up to ten people, and can seat restaurants. 10 people at the table, versus five people. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi announced changes to Tier 3 on March 11, including that bars could reopen under the same conditions as restaurants and the evening clock could be extended until midnight.

According to the mayor, the seven-day long count of Oahu is currently 42 days and the average positive percentage of seven days is 1.6%.
