Hacker claims to have stolen files from prominent law firm Jones Day

A hacker claims to have stolen files from the global law firm Jones Day and posted many of them on the dark web.

Jones Day has many prominent clients, including former President Donald Trump and large corporations.

Jones Day denied in a statement that his network had been disconnected. The statement reads that a file-sharing company he used was recently compromised and information was taken. Jones Day said it is continuing to investigate the offense and will continue to engage with customers and appropriate authorities.

The post by a person who identified himself as a hacker, named Clop, contains some individual documents that can be easily reviewed by the public, including by The Wall Street Journal. One memo is to a judge and is labeled ‘confidential mediation’, and another is a cover letter for enclosed ‘confidential documents’. The Magazine could not immediately confirm their authenticity.

The Journal could see the existence of many more files – large in size – that also allegedly belong to Jones Day, posted by the hacker on the so-called dark web. Hackers usually post such stolen information after the hacked entity does not pay a ransom. The Journal was able to contact the hacker using an email on its blog.
