H&M recently cites a well-known example of foreign companies being punished for exceeding China’s political lines as they face the plight of the government’s anger at clothing retailers criticizing human rights abuses in the cotton-producing Xinjiang region .

China claims more than 80% of the South China Sea and backs up its claim with a 1947 map showing vague lines – the so-called nine-line line – which descends to a point about 1,800 kilometers south of its Hainan Island. In 2019, Vietnam ordered cinemas to stop showing DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Abominable’ because it showed the nine-point line on a map. In the same year, Vietnam said it would fine Volkswagen AG’s local distributor and importer for exhibiting a car with a navigation app that reflects Chinese territorial claims.
While Vietnam was the region’s most popular country in pushing back Beijing’s claims in the South China Sea, tensions were also running high between the Philippines and China.
The presence of hundreds of Chinese vessels near a reef in the South China Sea last month shows Beijing’s intention to occupy more controversial areas, Philippine Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana said on Sunday.
The Chinese embassy in Manila said the waters where the vessels were spotted were ‘traditional fishing grounds’ and were part of the Chinese Nansha Islands. The Philippines has issued a formal diplomatic protest to China on the matter, saying the presence of the ships raises concerns about overfishing and safety of navigation.
