Greek Foreign Minister clashes with Turkish counterpart at news conference

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu clashed on Thursday at a joint news conference in Ankara that began with hopes of improved relations but quickly sank into serious accusations from both sides.

In the wake of months of tensions over territorial disputes in the Mediterranean, Dendias expressed support for Turkey’s attempt to join the European Union, but said the violations of Greece’s sovereignty would be sanctioned.

His remarks led to an outraged reaction from Cavusoglu who described them as “unacceptable”, prompting Dendias to say he was surprised Cavusoglu did not expect him to act as if nothing had happened in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean did not happen.
