Grace Kinstler stops the show in the All Star round of ‘American Idol’

It’s no coincidence that Berklee student Grace Kinstler has now completed three episodes of ‘American Idol’. She is a literal showstopper.

The powerhouse singer, who has been a favorite in the competition since her audition ended the season’s debut, dominated the stage in the All Star Duets and Solos series on Sunday. The episode was the first time the artists sang in front of a (socially-distanced) studio audience, and the first time viewers, not the judges, would decide their future on the program.

Kinstler’s solo was ‘Queen’ by Jessie J, a body-positive female empowerment song. The Chicagoan has talked in recent episodes about growing up with body insecurity.

The solo was followed by a duet with British singer-songwriter Joss Stone – “Midnight Train to Georgia” by Gladys Knight & The Pips.

“She’s so talented she can do anything with her voice,” Stone said.

Kinstler proved her right, effortlessly nailed the high notes and struck an impressive vocal run in the closing measure. (Stone’s advice: Save the end for the end. You’ll not be up to date with underwear … which will come later.)

“Wow! What do you want me to say? Let me just compose myself,” Judge Lionel Richie said after the performance.

Your voice quality, your confidence, the way you portray yourself on stage, it’s a winning package. ”

“The duet was timeless,” Judge Katy Perry said. “You have risen to another level.”

“I’m so excited to be a part of this, to see you grow as an artist and performer,” Judge Luke Bryan said. “I think it’s no surprise that I’m been a fan since day one.”

Brighton resident Beane and Boxford resident Colin Jamieson will perform their solos and duets on Monday night. Four finalists from each night will be sent home by audience voice, winning the competition from 24 to 16 next week when live performances begin.

Viewers can vote for their favorite singers up to ten times on the “American Idol” website, in the “American Idol” app (iOS, Android), or by texting participants’ numbers to 21523. Voting for each episode closes at 6 p.m. next day.

This article will be updated after Monday’s episode.
