Google has always offered Chrome profiles as a way for people sharing devices to keep their browser information separate. And while previous updates have focused on making signup easier and improved theme customizations, it’s not finished with the broader profile experience. Google’s latest update aims to make those custom spaces even more distinct.
With the new system, which is presented as a complete renewal of profiles, you can build and switch separate visual themes that are colored and include their own backgrounds. As usual, you can pick up this new look in the Chrome Web Store. After creating the profiles, it should theoretically be easier to identify each one when you return to the browser.
Compared to the existing profiles for different people you added to Chrome on one laptop, this new setup is different in a few ways. When creating a new profile, you will be asked to customize the browser’s appearance and select your color scheme of your choice. The themes are a visual indication that you’re in the right account, and Google told Engadget: “If you set up multiple profiles, you’ll see a profile selector every time you restart Chrome.”
While the focus is on avoiding jams between multiple Chrome users, it’s easy to suggest additional usage cases for users who want to keep their work activity (including bookmarks and history) separate from their personal browsing. The update will start in the coming weeks after desktops and also includes a reading list with which you can save articles that you want to check later.
