Google Podcasts Get Android Game Redesigned

Google’s latest beta app is implementing a redesign of the player screen in Google Podcasts. Simplification is the focus with more spacing on key controls, while other actions are hidden in the process.

Updated 2/8: The Google app 12.4 beta makes adjustments to the redesigned Podcasts Now Playing screen. The Sleep Timer is back in the bottom row with the previous move user interface. It is between the playing speed and the broadcast after. The queue is still in its new position on the left, while the overflow menu remains a sheet for ‘Share’ and ‘Mark as played’.

Original 1/7: In this new UI, the scrubber immediately appears under the cover art, the title of the episode, and the podcast author. It is no longer in the second to last row, and ever so slightly wider than before. This is followed by a play button flanked by the half-minute skip / jump and 10-second rewind.

Redesign Google Podcasts Player

Next to the latter element is a button to access the game drive, with the new placement unfortunately breaking symmetry. The biggest change today is to the bottom row of buttons, with the clear intention of clearing controls so that the buttons are not accidentally tapped.

Version 11.42

As the rope moves out of the left corner, the playing speed takes place. “Cast to” is centered just below the game, with an overflow button to the right that pops up a new tab. “Share” and “Mark as played” appear first, while the “Sleep timer” is moved here. The user interface for this feature has been adapted to a simple list and only standard increments are now provided: 5, 10, 15, 30, 35 minutes, 1 hour or ‘end of episode’.

This redesign of players for Google Podcasts starts with version 11.42 of the Google app beta. It has not yet been launched to the stable channel on Android, while the iOS app has not yet seen an update.
