Google Pixel 5a: news, leaks, releases, specs and rumors!

Although it took longer to be released than we initially hoped, last year’s Pixel 4a was one of the best Android phones in 2020. Between the OLED screen, reliable performance, the amazing camera and the price of $ 349 , it’s a phone that is still a murder value in 2021.

As good as the Pixel 4a still is, it’s time to look ahead to what’s next – specifically the Google Pixel 5a. Whether you’re interested in the latest rumors about specs, design sites or anything else, here’s all you need to know about Google’s upcoming Pixel!

One of the biggest selling points of the Pixel 4a was the price, and with the Pixel 5a we expect Google to stay committed to making it as affordable as possible. The Pixel 3a debuted in 2019 with a $ 399 MSRP, and a year later the 4a hit the scene with an even cheaper $ 349 price tag. With the Pixel 5a, Google has some options.

On the one hand, Google could try to lower the price even further – possibly to $ 299. Another price reduction of $ 50 would mean many annual upgrades over the Pixel 4a, but if Google can maintain the core Pixel experience while the 5a becomes even more accessible, it could be big for the company.

Another option is to stay at the $ 349 price tag for another year while offering subtle improvements. As you can see in the leaked versions throughout the article, it already looks like Google will be offering two rear cameras on the Pixel 5a, where the 4a only had one.

Holding on to $ 349 seems more likely, but at this point it’s just waiting and seeing until we hear something else.

Google Pixel 5a Availability

In addition to the price, another big question is around the Pixel 5a when we can buy it. The Pixel 3a was launched at Google I / O on May 7, 2019, and after months of delays, the Pixel 4a was officially announced on August 3, 2020.

At first we thought the Pixel 5a would return to the May release window, but given how little information is still available about the device, it looks likely that it will be pushed back until June or July. Similar to the uncertainty surrounding the price, the release of the Pixel 5a at this point is the best guess of all.

Here things start to get interesting. We saw our first Pixel 5a versions on February 22, 2021 – and as you can see, it definitely looks a very like the Pixel 4a 5G. In fact, it looks pretty much identical.

Like the 4a 5G, this Pixel 5a version has a 6.2-inch screen with a hole-cutout, two rear cameras and a fingerprint sensor on the back. We are also treated to exactly the same camera design, which looks like it’s a plastic construction and another boring black paint job.

If you reuse the Pixel 4a 5G hardware, it will be much cheaper for Google to manufacture the Pixel 5a, and if it is here, a lower price could not be out of the question. It would certainly have been nice to have a visual difference between the 5a and its predecessor, but it does not seem to be happening this year.

We talked about the price, availability and design of the Pixel 5a – but what about the specs? The rumor mill has not yet released much information, but there are a few things we can look forward to and speculate on.

The leak of the Pixel 5a also revealed some minor specs, suggesting that the phone will have a 6.2-inch OLED screen with a Full HD + resolution and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Other than that, the rest is up to the imagination.

For our part, we think it’s quite likely that the Pixel 5a will include something in the Snapdragon 700 series for its processor. The Snapdragon 750G would be a good upgrade from the Snapdragon 730G chipset of the Pixel 4a, and it would also allow 5G connectivity.

We can also probably expect another year of 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, along with a 60Hz refresh rate for the screen. It would be surprising to see Google increase to 90Hz for the Pixel 5a, but at the moment there is nothing to suggest that.

As for the camera situation, this is likely to be the exact setup found on the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 – that means a 12.2MP primary camera and an ultra-wide 16MP sensor.

Will there be a Pixel 5a XL?

Although we heard nothing about a Pixel 5a XL, the rumored 6.2-inch screen size for the regular Pixel 5a means that it will be significantly larger than last year’s model. The 5.8-inch screen on the Pixel 4a has made it a very convincing option for fans of smaller phones, so it’s quite a difference to go up to 6.2 inches.

Will the Pixel 5a have 5G support?

It’s hard to have a definite answer to this, so early in the rumor cycle, but if we were to guess, we would say 5G is a likely feature for the Pixel 5a. We’ve seen many other manufacturers release budget devices that allow 5G connectivity, and if Google wants to be taken seriously by providers and consumers, 5G is a must even for its cheapest phone of the year.
