Google Meet Outbreak Rooms can now be set up in Calendar

Over the past month, Google has announced a series of features for video calling for education and business clients. Some of them are now up and running, including the ability to pre-set Google Meet outbreaks using Calendar.

Support for up to 100 breakout rooms began in November to promote distance education and other training-like opportunities.

This makes it easier for teachers and meeting facilitators to prepare for differentiated learning, be considerate of group dynamics and avoid valuable time during the call to set up breakout rooms.

This simple feature starts with scheduling a Meet Call in Google Calendar. A rat icon opens the “Settings for this video event” page, and the “Breakout rooms” menu lets organizers organize people into groups. In the past, this could only be done at the beginning of the calls.

The setup of Meet Breakout rooms in Google Calendar starts today and will be fully available for the following levels during the next month:

Available for Google Workspace Essentials, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Nonprofits and Education Plus as well as G Suite Business Clients, Teaching and Learning Upgrade (starting in April)

It is not accessible to Workspace Business Starter and Education Fundamentals, or G Suite Basic.

Meanwhile, administrators with Workspace for Education Plus can enable Meet Survey for students with student licenses. This feature will be disabled by default.
