Google Maps Street View gets split screen UI on Android

Street View was launched a decade ago and this extensive image database is currently running the Live View AR feature. An update to Google Maps for Android enhances the Street View experience by adding a split screen mode.

The new split-view user interface is automatically launched when you open Street View after dropping a card pin. In the meantime, if you directly access Street View from a list of places, it’s the usual full screen interface. In those cases, you will see a ‘minimize’ button in the lower right corner.

The map below contains roads with street-level images highlighted in blue, and user-generated photospheres are shown as dots. You can tap anywhere to jump quickly, while the circle marker where you are contains an arrow pointing in the direction indicated. This method of navigation is far more convenient than navigating Arrows in Street View.

This Street View split screen is being rolled out widely (via Reddit) through a server-side update on recent versions of Google Maps. It appears on the Android client but not on iOS. Meanwhile, it has long been available on the internet, with the ability to adjust the height of each half.
