Google Maps on Android Automotive gets better EV loading

The two cars that currently drive Android Automotive are both electric. The built-in Google Maps app improves the way you find EV charging stations, before bringing Google’s dashboard experience to more vehicles.

Charging opportunities are an important consideration when planning trips, given the variety of current electric cars and the availability of stations that are highly dependent on where you travel.

On shorter trips, Maps lets you choose from a list of available chargers, using Google’s speed and network. For example, you can see destinations in the area to multitask while refilling your vehicle.

Google will specify stations and charging levels for ‘trips that require two or more recharging stops’ to reduce the total duration of the trip. ‘The company demonstrates the new routing algorithms it has developed, based on graphical theory that takes into account both driving and loading times. It had to create a solution that works in the many vehicles that Automotive will soon get.

Taking into account the different characteristics of each EV (such as the weight, the maximum battery level, the type of plug, etc.), the algorithm identifies which of the edges [route] feasible for the EV being considered and what not.

During this process, Google also takes into account the battery consumption, while Maps maintains detailed road information (height, height and slope). For the end user, this routing takes less than 10 seconds.

The latest new feature today will show which payment methods are accepted at stations in 12 European countries. Improvements to Google Maps EV charging points on Android Automotive are starting now.
