Google Maps finally decided to support dark mode on Android 539 days after Android 10. Officially launched. Google’s latest blog post says that the dark mode in Google Maps “will soon expand to all Android users worldwide”, making the feature official after many public experiments. .
Google’s uneven rollout strategy makes it difficult to pin down when any feature is officially ‘launched’. Some users have had a dark mode for a while due to various experiments and early implementation. Google has been teasing a dark mode for Google Maps since October 2019, and experimental implementation hit some users in September 2020. Google Maps has also been showing a dark-colored map in navigation mode for some time, but it is not the same as a comprehensive dark mode for all UI elements.
If Google Maps follows the best practices of Android, the UI must automatically switches to the dark theme when dark mode is activated in your system settings. Google says that you can also find a new “theme” section in the Google Maps settings, where you can manually enable the feature. The Google Maps dark mode that has been floating around for a while is on a server switch. The code is already on your device, so there is no version we can point to that can activate the dark mode; you just have to wait for Google to flag your account.
With Google Maps finally in dark mode train, it should cover all the major applications of Google. The Play Store, Gmail, Google Assistant, Chrome, Calendar, Drive, Photos, and YouTube all support dark mode.
