Google Maps ‘app language’ setting is now available worldwide

The choice of a language in Android settings applies to the whole system. With Google Maps, you can now set a language, which may be different from the rest of your phone, for menus, controls, and other in-app settings.

Tap your profile avatar in the top right corner and open Settings to access. ‘App language’, with the one currently set up, is now the first menu item. Announced for India last month, this option is now available worldwide:

This will allow anyone to search for places, get directions and navigate and communicate with the map in their own local language.

In a proposed section, general alternative choices are noted, while a list of ‘all’ languages follows. There are 79 in total, and Google is asking to confirm the change. This was followed by a restart of the app, as the language selection is quickly downloaded in the background.

After a restart, everything changes, from the bottom bar to search and settings. Captions are updated in the map layer, but place names are mostly unchanged. A small bug sees the hint in the search box stays the same until another app launches again.

The new language setting of Google Maps app is introduced via a server-side update for recent versions of the application. In the past, users could only change the voice used for navigation settings, although the broader preference has long been available online (Overflow menu> Language).
