Google Lens Search Tools Proactively Appear in Photos

Google Lens has long been part of Google Photos to help you visually search for images. On Android, Google Lens is now a more prominent part of Photos by identifying which photos benefit from the analytics and search tool.

Lens is activated today by opening a photo and selecting the appropriate icon in the bottom bar. It appears next to the share, edit, and delete actions.

Google now makes Lens available in the information sheet that appears when you delete an image. There is a new section “Search in this photo” under the date / time. Smart, this map only appears if Google detects that Lens would be useful, ie if the image or text contains text. As such, photos are quickly analyzed as soon as you pull up the sheet. This feature initially does not work to recognize monuments in our short testing.

There is a small thumbnail with the question of “Select text in image” and “Google Lens.” The four options are: Copy text, search, listen and translate. If you tap one, Lens will immediately start in that mode.

Google Lens is very useful for optical character recognition (OCR) and excellent time saving. However, most people do not know that it is available, and the addition of today is a step towards increasing its prominence.

This extensive availability of Google Lens in Photos for Android is widely introduced (via Android Police) on the latest version (5.33) of the application. It does not yet appear in the iOS client, which has not been updated since December and a new tablet-optimized version is missing.
