Google is known for overlapping multiple apps at once – just look at the messaging strategy. Although both Google Wifi and Nest Wifi have a dedicated app to control and monitor your network equipment from your phone, the Google Home app has gradually gained similar features over the past few months. It turns out that this is all part of the business intentions, and from next month you will need to use the Home app to set up and customize your Wi-Fi routers.

Although the dedicated Wifi app will not be able to switch off immediately from 25 May, it will switch to sight mode only. To set up a new router, add an access point, or change one of your network preferences, you need to migrate to Google Home. The app will be permanently removed from the Play Store sometime in June.

Google cites the growth of smart homes directly as the reason for the move. The Home app now controls almost every device manufactured by the company. Making specific software for networking equipment feels superfluous.
