Google Home app prepares ‘access roles’ for devices

After first noticing the features in development in September last year, Google wants to prepare an implementation of ‘access’ roles for household members in the Google Home app.

Sharing your Google Home household with other users is convenient for families and roommates, ensuring everyone has the ability to communicate with smart devices from their phones and speakers. However, this has long been a one-time approach. However, this will soon change with the arrival of new ‘access’ roles in the Google Home app.

The people at Android Police noted that the Google Home app for Android will at least enable the UI for this change, though nothing appears to be fully functional at this point. Under the “household” settings you can see a new page “Access summary” with “access details” and “devices”. At this time, the ‘details’ page is empty, but everyone is listed as an administrator. There is also a list of devices that shows all devices connected to the home, but there are no options for that yet. Google does provide an explanation of this feature on the page, but it is likely that this section may change if the settings are changed.

Everyone in this home can view all activities and have access to all devices and settings, including devices that will be added later. They can also edit all home settings and add and remove devices, services and people in this home.

This is probably waiting for a few more changes to the server at the end of Google before roles fully work. It looks like a useful new option anyway!
