Google fixes Gmail, Chrome crash with Android system WebView update

Google has fixed an issue with Android System WebView that caused apps like Gmail, Google Chrome, and others to crash. According to a report, users started noticing these crashes on Monday afternoon, and Google at the time advised users to switch to the Gmail desktop client. The search giant acknowledged the issue on its Google Workspace Status Dashboard and updated it regularly with follow-up until it was able to fix the issue directly today, March 23rd.

Some Google applications, including Gmail and Google Chrome, crashed for Android users due to a problem with Android System WebView – a system component powered by Chrome that allows Android applications to display web content. According to The Verge’s report, these app crashes started on Monday afternoon, March 22nd, and according to the Google Workspace Status Dashboard, the company acknowledged the problem today, March 23rd at 4:35 am.

“We are aware of an issue with Gmail that affects an important subset of users. The affected users do not have access to Gmail. We will provide an update by 23/03/21, 05:35, in which we describe when we expect to resolve the issue, ”reads the Google update.

It then advised users to temporarily switch to the Gmail interface on the computer until the issue is resolved. At 11:48 AM, Google fixed the issue with Android System WebView and released an updated version – 89.0.4389.105, as well as an update for Google Chrome. Users will need to update Android System WebView and Google Chrome from the Google Play Store in case they encounter these issues.

‘We’ve fixed the issue with WebView that caused some apps on Android to crash for some users. Updating Android System WebView and Google Chrome via Google Play should now resolve the issue, ”a Google spokesman told Gadgets 360.

While the services were down, Samsung Support tweeted by removing the latest update from WebView fixes the issue, together with the steps to do so, which seems to have fixed the issue for some users.
