It looks like Google Duo may soon stop working on uncertified Android devices, according to the trend set by the Google Messages app.
About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” position, we have decompiled the latest version of an application that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompose these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see different code rules that indicate possible future features. Please keep in mind that Google may or may not send these features, and that our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We will try to enable those who are closer to finishing to show you what they will look like in the event that they are shipped. Read on with that in mind.
Uncertified Android devices
Earlier this week, an update to the Google Messages app included a notice that the app would stop working on ‘uncertified’ Android devices. More specifically, a certified device is one that has been tested by Google, which may use the “Android” name and is provided with a range of Google applications, including Play Services.
For the average person who simply buys well-known phones from their service provider or retailer, the chances of ever coming across an uncertified device are slim. That said, a notable example is that recent Huawei devices have not been certified for Play Services.
The latest update of Google Duo – version 123, now released via the Play Store – contains a notification similar to the one included with Google Messages.
Duo will be leaving soon.
Because you’re using an unsupported device, Duo will soon delete your account on this device. Download your clippings and name the history to avoid losing it.
Although the phrasing is a bit different, calling an unsupported device ‘instead of’ uncertified ‘Android devices, a quick glance at the code of the Google Duo app reveals that it’s indeed linked to’ GmsCompliance ‘ .
In short, if your Android phone is not properly certified to use Google Play Services, it may soon lose the ability to place and receive Google Duo calls. Contrary to the Google Messages notice that comes on March 31st, Google Duo does not share when it stops working on affected devices.
